With yearbook superlatives such as “City of Festivals” and “Best Summer City”, it’s no surprise that Edmonton is ready for the largest celebration of the decade. Not the end of the Oilers’ dry spell, but Canada’s 150th birthday! July 1st is right around the corner and it’s time to dig out your maple leaf covered board shorts. Here is a breakdown of the Canada Day events happening in and around Edmonton.
City Hall (11 am – 6 pm)
Watch performances including First Nations Dancers, magicians, bands and Taekwondo, and participate in many family friendly activities. Churchill Square will also be the home of the Works Art and Design Festival that will celebrate Canada’s diversity, history and culture.
Alberta Legislature (7 am – 9 pm)
Spend your entire day down at the Leg. With the annual pancake breakfast in the morning and activities, food and performances throughout the day, the River Valley fireworks display will end the celebration off right.
St. Albert (7 am – 11 pm)
Throughout the city will be live entertainment, games, inflatables, crafts and a free all day outdoor concert.
Muttart Conservatory (10 am – 3 pm)
Take in their special 150th anniversary Feature Pyramid alongside music, entertainment, giveaways, tours and activities.
Chintatown Night Market (2 pm – 8 pm)
Celebrate Canada’s birthday in Edmonton’s Chinatown in front of the Wong’s Benevolent Association and Double Greeting Wonton House. There will be traditional entertainment, arts and gift sales, and food trucks.
Fort Saskatchewan (8 am – 10:45 pm)
Visit Fort Saskatchewan for the car show, farmers’ market, parade, yoga, music, fireworks and more.
Art Gallery of Alberta (10 am – 5 pm)
View the new ‘Past Imperfect: A Canadian History Project’ exhibit with free admission.
Sherwood Park (8:30 am – 11 pm)
With axe throwing, bubble soccer, carnival games, human foosball, obstacle inflatables, t-shirt making, laser tag, and many more activities, there’s no reason you should miss out on this fun-filled celebration!
Canada 150 in 150 Celebration (7 pm)
Join Sarah McLachlan at Rogers Place to celebrate Canada’s 150th! Tickets are currently on sale for $50.
Blues on Whyte Block Party (10 am – 10 pm)
With 6 food trucks and 40 vendors, you can party into the night listening to the best of Blues.
Edmonton Prospects (7 pm)
Watch the Prospects play against Moose Jaw and then pay $5 for admission after the game to get yourself the perfect seat for the River Valley fireworks.
Elk Island National Park
Celebrate Canada’s nature at the nearest national park and spend the day exploring, canoeing and picnic-ing (and admission is free).
Leduc (8 am – 11 pm)
The day starts with the 5K Foam Fest, and continues with a BBQ, carnival, concert, farmers’ marketing and ends with, of course, fireworks.
Edmonton Valley Zoo (11 am – 4 am)
Celebrate 3 birthdays this Canada Day including Lucy the Elephant’s and the Valley Zoo’s. Bring your kids to this birthday party for a scavenger hunt, live music, cupcakes and the opportunity to paint with Lucy.
