Cannabis Resources

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada, it is important to understand that each province determines its own regulations in regards to selling, possession, and distribution. We have put together a list of resources and general information.

Canadian Government Legislation

The new federal government legislation states that adults 18 years and older can, in public, possess 30 grams of dried cannabis or the equivalent, and share up to this much with other adults. They are able to buy dried, fresh, or oil forms of cannabis from a provincially licensed retailer, and grow up to 4 plants per residence for personal use. Finally, adults are legally allowed to make their own cannabis infused products at home, so long as organic solvents are not used. Of course, these provisions are subject to provincial legislation, which take precedence.

Equivalencies were developed as legal possession limits are based on dry weight.
One (1) gram of dried cannabis is equivalent to the following:

  • Five (5) grams of fresh cannabis
  • Fifteen (15) grams of edible product
  • Seventy (70) grams of liquid product
  • A quarter of a gram (0.25) grams of concentrates (solid or liquid)
  • One (1) cannabis plant seed

The Canadian government also plans to have edible products and concentrates legal for sale in about a year.
While most legislation changes are related to the decriminalization of cannabis, changes have also been made to legislation surrounding the use of cannabis for medical purposes, mostly focused on improving patient access. Patients who are currently registered under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) will not need to take action at this time as their current registration will automatically transition to the new regulations, and will maintain their existing expiry date.
